Electrical safety for the winter lights on your favourite garden trees
Now the clocks have changed many people like to bring out their decorative lights to cheer up the dark evenings.

Whether you’re getting in the seasonal spirit with some extra indoor or outdoor lights, we’ve got some electrical safety tips for you.

Your seasonal electrical safety checklist

Electrical accidents can happen at any time of year, but during the festive season decorations and lights increase the risks.

Here are some easy things you can do at home or at work to reduce the chances of an accident. You’ll help to keep everyone safe so they can enjoy the celebrations.

if your lights are old check them carefully for damaged wires and plugs
if any lamps aren’t working replace them immediately – if they aren’t replaceable don’t use the product
buy new decorations from reputable retailers
ideally use extra-low voltage LED lights and you’ll save energy too
follow the manufacturer’s instructions
only use light decorations as recommended, especially for outdoor use
unplug your decorations when not in use and especially at night
keep decorative lights away from flammable materials such as costumes and wrappings
light-up costumes are fun, but check them carefully for damaged battery compartments or loose wires
keep pavements and driveways well-lit and clear of wires to minimise trips and falls
don’t overload sockets and distribution boards
don’t connect lighting sets together.

Outside lights

If you’re putting up lights outside make sure they are suitable. Look for a water drop symbol and an IP (ingress protection) rating of at least IPX 3. Use a residual current device (RCD) to minimise the risk of an electrical shock or fire.

If you don’t have outside sockets you should have some installed by a qualified electrician. You might also like to think about installing some extra outside lighting to improve visibility and safety.
