Power of ethernet is one of the items included in Amendment 4 of the Wiring Regulations.
This month sees publication of draft amendments to the Wiring Regulations for public consultation (DPC). Known as Amendment 4, the changes will fit in with European standards.
Amendment 3 was published last month for use alongside the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations and Amendment 2. Amendment 3 covers selection and installation of protective devices, particularly for installations with an additional power source, such as battery storage or solar panels. Until the new changes come into effect we must use all three documents.

What to expect in Amendment 4

Publication of the latest changes is due in 2026. When complete, they will help us keep pace with fast-moving changes in technology, installation practices and standardisation.

This latest Amendment will include:
stationary secondary batteries
low voltage generating sets
power over ethernet
energy efficiency
earthing functional-equipotential-bonding (EPB) for improved safety with information and communication technology (ICT) equipment and systems.

The IET

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has worked with the British Standards Institution (BSI) for over 30 years. Together they help us keep electrical installations safe. As the use of electrical equipment, devices, chargers and connections increases high standards of safety become even more important.

A committee of experts from across the electrotechnical sector maintains and updates the Wiring Regulations. Selection of members is based on their experience and the organisations they represent. It’s their job to make sure the Regulations meet the needs of homeowners, commercial and industrial businesses.

As members of NICEIC, the MSE team stays up to date with the latest developments and changes affecting electrical installation and maintenance.
