Keeping cool at work
Posted on 2nd July 2018
When the sun is shining outdoors workplaces can easily overheat. A recent report by Unison showed how too much heat at work can make us feel less energetic, cause muscle cramps and place extra strain on the heart and lungs.
Tiredness and loss of concentration can also lead to an increased risk of accidents, especially in manufacturing environments.
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance says that acceptable workplace temperatures in the UK are between 13°C (56°F) and 30°C (86°F).
Opening windows and doors to keep the temperature down isn’t ideal. Even if you have air conditioning, it’s important to make sure it’s operating properly with regular maintenance.
A well-designed and maintained air conditioning system will help to:
reduce employee sickness leave
reduce security risks (no open windows or doors).
